Sandwich panel market: who is the leader and what are the problems

This “Construction.RU” review is dedicated to price dynamics for sandwich panel production in different regions of Russia.

Despite the diversity of sandwich-panels produced in Russia, the most widespread for industrial and office premises’ construction are those sandwich-panels made of thin sheet steel that consist of two channelled steel sheets filled with insulation material.

The largest output of sandwich panels is in the Central Federal District. The production volume in 2014 totalled 44,227 tons and in 2015 it was 58,567 tons. The second place is occupied by the Siberian Federal District (with, respectively, 71,391 tons and 55,314 tons).

All sandwich-panels produced in Russia are used only on the domestic market. According to data from Rosstat (Federal State Statistics Service), these products are not exported.

To begin with we shall consider the production of sandwich panels in 2014—2015, then monthly in 2016.

On the whole, in the RF, the output of the enterprises producing sandwich panels totalled 4,534.8 tons fewer than in 2014. The total volume decrease was about 3%. Nevertheless, there was a significant growth of demand in a number of districts and, correspondingly, panels’ production for prefabricated buildings increased.

Thus, the growth in the Southern FD totalled 103%, though the figures are not so considerable (from 1,870 tons in 2014 to 3,800 tons in 2015). In the North-Caucasian FD the growth totalled 82%, or 78,000 tons, and in the Central FD this product’s output increased by 14,000 tons (or 32%). The decrease of the output of sandwich panels’ volumes was registered only in the Volga FD (-24%) and in the Siberian FD (-23%).

Analysing the panel production monthly one may see positive dynamics in 2016. Thus, for November 2016,  97,082 tons were produced, whereas in 2015, 140,071 tons were produced during the year. The monthly average of panel production from January to November in 2016 equalled 8,661 tons. Respectively, the total production volume will be close to the data from 2015.

Analysing producers’ prices over federal districts, according to Rosstat’s data, one cannot assess them objectively. Depending on the demand, panels of different thickness are produced, which is because of the different climatic conditions of different regions.

Panels also differ as to their functionality (wall and roofing), over-cover (plastic film or other material), availability and visibility of attachment, filling cost, etc.

We may objectively only analyse the price dynamics in different federal districts.

While analysing the price dynamics from January, 2015, to November, 2016, an insignificant growth of production enterprises’ prices for sandwich panels was detected in practically all of the federal districts. Thus, the average price over Russia increased by 43 roubles/m2, or by 12%.

In the Central FD, the growth for 2 years was more significant, at 234 roubles/m2, or 18%. Similar figures were in the Volga FD at 200 roubles/m2 (17%). The situation is more steady in the Ural FD, with + 21 roubles/m2 (price growth by 7% for 2 years). Prices decreased in the Siberian FD by 21 roubles/m2, or by 1%, though the output volume of these products is in the second place, following the Central FD.

Comparing the dynamics of sandwich panels’ output volumes and prices one may come to the conclusion that the demand and, correspondingly, production of this type of material shows positive dynamics and steady prices for the produced materials, despite the crisis in the construction industry.
