The authorities of the European Union call viable the project for a high-speed railway construction, Rail Baltic, connecting the Baltic states with Central Europe, and promise to support it financially.

According to the head of the Transport Directorate General at the European Commission, Henrik Hololei, an analysis of Rail Baltic’s costs and payback carried out by Ernst&Young suggests the viability of a future railroad, and thus justifies the support by the European Union.

“Good communication between European countries and regions is a priority of the EU policy. The Baltic states have a unique opportunity to receive full benefits from such a policy. I urge all project-related states to act decisively before it is too late”, - the press office of the European Commission quotes the speech by Mr. Hololei at a two-day conference entitled “Rail Baltica Global Forum” started in Riga.
