The Prime Minister of Canada, Justin Trudeau, said in a telephone conversation with U.S. President Donald Trump that he considered ungrounded the export duties on timber and will protect local manufacturers, as it follows from the official statement.

As to softwood, the Prime Minister rejected the ungrounded allegations of the US Department of Commerce and the decision to impose unfair fees, the document reads. According to it, the Prime Minister stressed that the government of Canada would firmly defend the interests of Canadian softwood industry, as it had been the case during previous disputes with the United States over timber.

According to Trudeau's office, the two leaders stressed the importance of achieving mutually acceptable agreements on this issue.
