At present, Japan is considering the Russian-proposed options for cooperation on the southern part of the Kuril Islands and at further negotiations intends to raise the question of a legal basis of such projects.

This is what the Deputy Head of the Japanese Foreign Ministry, Takeo Akiba, told TASS news agency on the eve of the upcoming meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, scheduled for April 27.

“Regarding joint economic activities on four northern Islands, an agreement was reached following a meeting of the leaders of two countries in December last year to start the consultations over the cooperation in fishing, sea-farming, tourism, medicine, ecology and other possible areas”, the diplomat said.
