NASA has developed an inflatable greenhouse for the use in manned missions to the Moon and Mars. The prototypes, which the agency built on the Earth, are intended for growing crops.

The greenhouse will grow a crop for early researchers and at the same time to clean the air they breathe, making up a critical component of the life support system. Greenhouses are also designed to play a role in the recycling of water and disposal of waste in a process known as “bioregeneration life support system”.

The prototype has a shape of a cylindrical structure with the length of about five and a half meters and a diameter of two and a half meters, built by Sadler Machine companies. For the purpose to protect plants from radiation in space, greenhouses are likely to be placed below the surface of the Moon and Mars. In this case, a specialized lighting will be required.
