The rally of opponents of the city administration’s program for housing renovation was held in Moscow on May 14, on Sakharov Avenue.

According to the Moscow department of the Internal Affairs Ministry of Russia, about 8,000 people took part in the protest action. Meanwhile, Bely Schetchik organization claims that more than 20,000 people have passed through metal detectors installed on the Avenue. The rally’s organizers insist that the event was attended by over 30,000 people.

The protest action against the housing renovation program was sanctioned by the city authorities.

The day before the rally, Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin said that he had introduced to the Moscow city Duma a 12-item bill providing guarantees for residents of the houses subject to resettlement. In particular, he promised that in case a general meeting of the house decided not to participate in the program, the house would not be demolished.

Previously, the city published a list of 4,500 houses in 85 districts of the city that had been included in the housing renovation program. Later, Mr. Sobyanin said that additional 15 houses would be excluded from the list, since their residents claimed that their homes had been enrolled on the list by mistake.
