Citizens of Switzerland have voted at a popular referendum for gradual nuclear phase-out and a transition to the usage of alternative sources, Rambler news reports on Monday.

According to preliminary data, about 58% of citizens have voted against the construction of new nuclear power plants. Thus, the law, which will come into effect in 2018, provides for a transition to renewable energy sources until 2050. Five Switzerland’s nuclear power plants will continue to operate for 10-15 years more, but new NPPs will not be built.

As reported earlier, on the 27th of November 2016, the Swiss rejected an accelerated nuclear phase-out of the country. An initiative launched by the Green Party on an early stop of all nuclear power plants has also been rejected by 55% voters.
