In late March, Donald Trump’s administration considered lifting sanctions from Russia’s oil industry, claiming that decreased oil production in Russia would damage the U.S. economy, Interfax news agency reports with the reference to American media.

According to e-mails of the former U.S. officials reviewed by the Daily Beast, State Department managed to persuade the authorities that easing restrictions, on the contrary, would hurt energy sector of the USA, whereas Moscow would only benefit from such a decision, if it did not offer anything in return.

As it became known, it was NSC strategist Kevin Harrington who advocated lifting sanctions imposed on Russian oil sector. He argued that there was no point in those measures, since they did not cause significant damage to Russia.
