Russia and Japan are discussing the development of joint economic activities on Southern Kuril Islands, a spokesperson for Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Maria Zakharova, announced on Thursday.
“Currently, the parties are engaged in negotiations over the possibility of developing joint economic activities in this territory”, Zakharova said at a press briefing on current issues of foreign policy of the Russian Federation.
According to her, based on Russia’s draft project and counter-proposals on the part of Tokyo, a number of initiatives to promote social and economic development of the islands are planned to be agreed.
“After that, we are ready to discuss with Japan the legal framework for their implementation”, Zakharova added.
