India and Pakistan’s joining the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) will give a new impetus to the development of the organization, President of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev said.

A meeting of the Council of heads of SCO member countries in private session is currently held in Astana. The leaders of Russia, Kazakhstan, China, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan take part in the session.

“A new story of our organization starts at the summit in Astana. This is the last time the meeting is held in a six-party format. Today we have agreed to sign a resolution on the completion of admission procedures and the granting of a status of SCO member states to India and Pakistan,” Mr. Nazarbayev said opening the session.
