Putin argues for necessity to ensure Russia’s sovereignty in Arctic

It is necessary to ensure Russia's sovereignty, security of its economic activities and transport routes in the Russian Arctic, Russian President Vladimir Putin said over the course of The Direct Line on Thursday.




“We need to ensure the use of these routes, economic activities in these territories, to ensure its sovereignty over these territories,” Vladimir Putin said during his traditional session of questions and answers, referring to the Russian Arctic.

The President has also noted that from the perspective of the support of a defensibility capacity of the Russian Federation, the Arctic is a critical region.

As a reference, the Arctic located in the northernmost part of Earth consists of the Arctic Ocean, adjacent seas, and parts of Alaska, Canada, Finland, Greenland, Iceland, Norway, Russia and Sweden.
