Eight greenhouses built with the World Bank funding have been commissioned in the Uruzgan province, Afghanistan.

The official ceremony held on this occasion on the 10th of June was attended by province’s Governor Mohammad Nazir Kharoti. He has noted that the project estimated at $500,000 is intended to strengthen the economy, increasing yields of vegetables.

The greenhouses occupy an area of about 2850 square meters. Each of them can produce 68 tons of cucumbers, 56 tons of tomatoes, 40 tones of lettuce and 36 tons of aubergines per year, Pajhwok news agency reports.

The head of the agriculture department of the province, Zalmai Aloko, told reporters that 38 greenhouses are operating in Uruzgan. Another 28 such facilities are scheduled to be completed soon, he added.
