Builders of a new third line of Rome’s subway have found a wooden house dating from II-III century AD.

Archaeologists suggest that two its premises have been preserved until our times in good condition, paradoxically, because of fire. The matter is that wood is preserved only in favourable climatic and temperature conditions, or after natural disasters such as the destruction of ancient Pompeii and Herculaneum by Vesuvius eruption.

This discovery was made near Colosseum at a depth of ten meters. It is unique due to the charred parts of a wooden ceiling and a few pieces of furniture – tables and stools, Il Messaggero reports.

The thesis of a rapid and destructive fire engulfing the building is confirmed by the discovery of two skeletons of domestic animals – a dog and cat.
