The Latvian government at a session on Tuesday decided to allocate 700,000 euro to put in order the territory of a landfill in Riga, once demolished by a major fire, RIA Novosti reports.

A fire at an illegal landfill of plastic debris in Jurmala’s district of Sloka began on June 18. The fire-fighting brigade managed to localize only 12 hours later. The fire area was 1.2 hectare. According to the Public Environmental Service, apart from plastic intended for recycling, dangerous household waste have been stored there.

The Public Environmental Service appealed to the government for financial assistance to bring the territory in order for the purpose of preventing further contamination of soil and groundwater with hazardous waste.
