The premier of the Australian state of Victoria has announced that nearly 7,000 jobs will be created by the Metro Tunnel project, TCI reports.
Major construction on the tunnel and stations is expected to start next year. Early works on the project are well underway. The 7,000 jobs created by the biggest public transport project in the history of Victoria include recruitment of 500 apprentices, trainees and engineering cadets working as part of the tunnels and stations package.
“The Metro Tunnel is the biggest ever public transport project ever built in Victoria, and it will need a record number of Victorian workers and businesses to get the job done,” the CTI cites Premier Daniel Andrews
More than 88% of the materials used to build the new tunnels and underground stations will be sourced locally, including 93% local steel.
Andrews added that 65% of the project will be delivered by small and medium-sized businesses.
The project will be completed by 2026.
