President Vladimir Putin of Russia and Turkish leader Recep Tayyip Erdogan via video conferencing have launched the construction at the site of the Akkuyu nuclear power plant.

This will be the first such object to be built in Turkey. The NPP includes 4 power units with reactors made in Russia, each with a capacity of 1,200 MW. The project is being implemented for the first time in the world with the use of a build-own-operate model, which means that Russia builds and then owns and operates the facility. The first block of the Akkuyu NPP is planted to be started in 2023.

Earlier on April 3, Erdogan called the project which is realized by Rosatom, a Russian nuclear energy corporation, essential for relations between the two nations. Turkish President noted in his Twitter account that that was about a grandiose project worth $20 billion.
