On Tuesday, President Recep Erdogan of Turkey has expressed hope that he together with President Vladimir Putin of Russia will open the Akkuyu NPP in 2023.

On April 3, the two leaders kicked off the construction of Turkey’s first nuclear power station.

“We have yet to work hard but I hope that we, Mr. Putin, will take part in the opening of the fully built station in 2023,” Erdogan said at a groundbreaking ceremony for the first unit of the NPP, which was also attended by the Russian President.

Erdogan has emphasized that Akkuyu will cover 10% of Turkey's electricity needs and ensure the country's energy security.

“This station will ensure 10% of the country’s demand for electricity. This energy is clean and it will safeguard our energy security as well as will play an essential role in challenging a climate change”, he added.

The event took place within the Russian President's visit to Ankara.
