More than 800 local residents attended the street protests against the construction of a cement plant near the Russian city of Veliky Novgorod.
According to Kolmovo news website, 850 people signed a petition opposing the implementation of this project. The open letter was sent to Governor of the Novgorod region Andrey Nikitin and Chief Federal Inspector for the Novgorod Region, Vadim Nepryakhin.
It was residents of various neighborhoods and villages that rallied to protest against the cement plant construction. The protesters claim that a cement plant harms the human health. In particular, it is due to dust that is “the strongest allergen which weakens immunity and has cancer-causing properties,” the letter says.
The plant is planned to be built near the village of Zuevo. Local residents anticipate that ecology in the area will be significantly damaged.
