German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, speaking at a press conference with the head of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko, called on Kiev not to blame Berlin for the construction of Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline, RNS reports on Tuesday.

“You do not have to blame us. If we are talking about Nord Stream 2, we are also talking about the future and security of Ukraine”, he said, noting that Germany is making efforts to ensure the transit of natural gas through Ukraine after the gas pipeline construction.

“I hope that these negotiations will bring results in the near future. The greatest concern in Ukraine is that it will cease to be a gas transit country in the future. I think that these are unfounded anxieties”, Frank-Walter Steinmeier added.

Earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that the transit of gas through Ukraine after the implementation of Nord Stream 2 project would not be suspended. According to the head of state, the supplies will be continued if they prove to be economically justified.
