Egypt has chosen the Chinese consortium for building the world's largest coal-fired power plant with a capacity of 6 GW, outstripping the current record holder — Taiwan.

According to GCR, three companies have been struggling for the right to implement this project: the Japanese consortium of Mitsubishi and Hitachi, the team of the US company General Electric jointly with the Chinese Harbin Electric, as well as the consortium of Chinese Shanghai Electric and Dongfang Electric Corporation together with the Egyptian Hassan Allam Construction. The latter offered the lowest price for the construction of the facility — $ 4.4 billion.

The project provides for the construction of a power station with a generating capacity 500 MW higher than that of the Taichung power plant in Taiwan, which is now the largest coal-fired power plant in the world. Coal for a new Egyptian station will be purchased from manufacturers at low prices and delivered to Egypt by sea.
