Russia has started construction of a military town intended for servicemen of the Northern Fleet air defense unit. The military base will be located in Yakutia’s port of Tiksi, Interfax news agency reported on Monday.

“Today, during the working trip to the Tiksi (Yakutia) garrison, the commander of the Northern Fleet, Admiral Nikolay Yevmenov, took part in a groundbreaking ceremony of a modern block-modular town for the servicemen of the Air Force and Air Defense unit of the Northern Fleet”, the Fleet’s press service said.

Last November, Yevmenov announced that a new air defense division would be formed in 2018 within the fleet. It is going to be deployed on the Novaya Zemlya Archipelago, as well as in the townships of Dixon and Tiksi. According to the Fleet’s press service, the construction of a military town is planned to be carried out within six months.

“It will comprise 11 facilities, including dormitories for servicemen, the administrative building, diesel power station, water and fuel storage, personnel dining hall, garage, etc. All the facilities will be interconnected by the roofed passages, which is especially important in the Far North and Arctic regions”, the press service added.

The Northern Fleet is a multi-service strategic formation of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation, which defends Russia's national interests both in the Arctic and in other regions of the World Ocean.
