Lukashenko offers to Lithuania joint exploitation of Belorussian NPP

Alexander Lukashenko said that he had met ambassador of Lithuania and called him on to cooperate on the nuclear power plan exploitation and offered that Belarus would supply electricity to the country, given its energy deficit, at a favourable price. He added that there were a lot of options of how to jointly exploit the facility.

As a reference, Belorussian NPP is being constructed upon the Russian “VVER-1200” project. The facility will consist of two power units with a capacity of 1200 MW each. Launch of the first unit is scheduled for 2018, the second will be started in 2020.

At the same time, Lithuania is the most vigorous critic of the under-construction Belorussian NPP. A number of experts believe that this opposition is due to competition for the perspective energy market, since Lithuania, Estonia and Poland intend to jointly build Visaginas NPP.
