USA to build $1,6 bln facility storing spent nuclear fuel

New facility is supposed to be erected on a plot of land with an area of 2,300 square meters, where Idaho National Laboratory, the key U.S. nuclear energy research institution, is located.

According to AP, the given laboratory has been receiving spent nuclear fuel from the U.S. combat vessels since 1957. Establishing a new facility is necessitated by the fact that the existing enterprises are outdated and are unable to process spent nuclear fuel from the vessels of a new type.

At the same time, the U.S. authorities consider possibility to continue the usage of the existing facilities in Idaho after their modernization and re-equipment.
