The European Parliament approved a report on European development strategy for compressed natural gas and gas storage, in which increasing import from Russia and Gazprom’s Nord Stream 2 project were named one of the main threats.
European parliamentarians demand that the gas pipeline don’t receive financial support and that it meets the requirements of the EU Third Energy Package. However, the lawmakers acknowledge that the document isn’t compulsory.
The approved strategy envisages expansion of the compressed natural gas usage and reducing EU’s dependence on gas in a long-term perspective, as well as diversification of energy supply.
According to the final statement by the Parliament, the Nord Stream 2 project, construction of which is being negotiated by Gazprom and its European partners – Engie, OMV, Shell, Uniper and Wintershall – contradicts the EU’s interests.
