EU supports Russian nuclear project in Hungary

This is what Bloomberg reports today citing the source in an entourage of Hungarian Prime Minister, Janos Lazar. According to the agency, following such decision, works at the NPP construction site might start as early as in 2017 – 2018.

As a reference, Paks nuclear power plant generating over 50% of electric energy in the country is situated 100 kilometers from Budapest. The station was built upon the Soviet-era project and currently four power units with VVER-440 reactors operate at the facility.

At the end of 2014, Russia and Hungary signed an agreement on construction of two more power units with VVER-440 reactors at that NPP. Also, Moscow grants a loan in amount of 10 billion euro to Hungarian government for the project’s implementation.
