Building six nuclear reactors is promoted by the South African government and intended to increase the country’s nuclear capacity, in order to decrease its dependence on coal-fired plants. For that purpose, the government asked Eskom to procure an additional 9,600 megawatts of capacity.

At present, the Republic of South Africa has the continent's only nuclear power station.
