Monument to Georgian poet Shota Rustaveli opens in St Petersburg

The monument was created by Zurab Tsereteli, a Georgian-Russian painter, sculptor and architect known for large-scale and at times controversial monuments. It was mounted at the intersection of Rustaveli Street and The Enlightenment Avenue.

In 2016, the 850th anniversary of Rustaveli is celebrated. The bronze sculpture was mounted in honor of this significant date on the initiative of the St. Petersburg society named after Shota Rustaveli and the Georgian diaspora in Saint Petersburg.
