Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway to be put in operation early in 2017

“The main railway line project Baku-Tbilisi-Kars, which has been implemented jointly by Turkey, Georgia and Azerbaijan, was launched in my tenure as the Transport Minister and now it is already at the final stage,” - said Yildirim.

“I hope that in the first quarter of 2017, the project will be completed and we will be able to extend the transport corridor and restore historical Silk Way”, - the Turkish Prime Minister noted.

On the 7th of February, 2007, Georgia, Azerbaijan and Turkey signed an intergovernmental agreement on the establishment of a railway corridor with the use of existing railway line Tbilisi-Baku. The project includes construction of Kars-Akhalkalaki railway with the length of 98 km, 68 km of which will pass through Turkey and 30 km through Georgia, as well as the reconstruction of a 183-km of Akhalkalaki-Tbilisi section.
