Baku intends to get rid of Khrushchev-era apartment blocks

“Threatening lives and causing serious damage to the appearance of the city Khrushchev-era apartment blocks can be demolished in future,” Ilgar Isbatov told reporters.

According to him, currently, in Baku, the demolition of 1-2-storey houses are planned to be demolished in the first place. “After a time, Khrushchev-era apartment blocks can be demolished as well, but first it is necessary to start with low-storey buildings,” he stressed.

At present, houses in Sabunchu, Binagadi, Nasimi, Yasamal, Khatai and Nizami districts of Baku are being demolished within the framework of pilot projects. New high-rise buildings will replace them soon.

As a reference, Khrushchev-era apartments, also referred to as Khrushchyovka, is a type of low-cost, concrete-paneled or brick three- to five-storied apartment building, developed in the USSR in 1960s, under Nikita Khrushchev.
