EU refused to finance fence construction between Lithuania and Kaliningrad

As far as the borderline between Lithuania and the Kaliningrad region is concerned, Ernst said at the briefing on Tuesday, it is the outer boundary of the Schengen zone, and Lithuania is responsible for its improvement and financing. According to Ernst, the EU supports border management and equipment, but not the construction of fences.

Earlier, Lithuanian media reported that €3.6 m are provided in the republic’s state budget for the construction of a protective fence along the boundary between Lithuania and the Kaliningrad region, to provide, according to Lithuanian Prime-Minister, Saulius Skvernelis, for the economic security of Lithuania.

The fence is planned to be built from the town of Vishtitis (where Lithuania boarders on Russia and Poland) to Niamunas. It will be a 135 km long and 2.5 m high wire fence. The construction is to start in spring.
