Russian President Vladimir Putin, politicians, as well as foreign diplomats, including Churkin’s staunch opponents, have already expressed their condolences and gave their best estimate of the work and diplomatic talents of the Russia's UN ambassador.
U.S. Ambassador Nikki Haley admitted that although she and Churkin did not always agree, “he unquestionably advocated his country's positions with great skill.”
Vitaly Churkin died from heart attack. The official was found unconscious at his office on East 67th Street around 9:30 a.m., after what he was taken to a hospital. Mr. Churkin died at 10:55 a.m.
Vitaly Churkin has served in his position since 2006.
