Gas first-ever gets ahead of coal as fuel for U.S. power plants

The IEA noted that, in 2016, coal demand fell worldwide, but the decline was particularly acute in the US, where demand fell by 11%. The Agency also indicates that last year renewable energy sources, including hydropower, supplied more than half of global electricity demand, with hydropower accounted for half of this share.

A total increase in nuclear capacity in the world last year was the highest since 1993, the IEA report said.
