Norway sets to build world’s first tunnel for ships

A tunnel with the length of over a mile (1.6 km) will be able to receive cruise and cargo ships. Its width will amount to 36 meters and the height will be over 45 meters.

The government plans to allocate 1 billion Norwegian krone ($118 million) to this project from the state budget. The tunnel construction is expected to begin in 2018 and could take about 4 years.

It is noted that in that area, the Norwegian Sea meets the North Sea, what forms the turbulent undercurrents that caused the deaths of dozens of people over the last few decades.
