This is the northermost well on the Russian Arctic shelf and the first one to be drilled under the waters of the Laptev Sea with the project depth amounting to up to five kilometers.
The exploratory drilling was kicked off by the President of Russia Vladimir Putin during a teleconference with the head of Rosneft, Igor Sechin, who was on the shore of Khatanga Bay.
The President noted the significance of the project, since “in fact, we will start the activities in the entire oil and gas province, which, even according to preliminary data, contains millions of tons of conditional fuel. This is a complex, high-tech operation, a so-called horizontal drilling.”
