President Radev has explained that the Bulgarian government has made a decision to resume the project.
“The Belene NPP project has resumed — the decision was made by the Bulgarian Parliament and the Government. You will be informed about the progress of this project. The resumption of the project also assumes Russian participation”, Radev was quoted as saying by the press office of the Russian Government.
Earlier, in the mid-May this year, the first Deputy General Director of Rosatom, Kirill Komarov, announced that Rosatom was ready to assist Bulgaria in the construction of Belene NPP.
As a reference, in 2012, the government of Bulgaria abolished the construction of Belene NPP, which was intended to become the second nuclear power plant in the country, after unsuccessful attempts to attract foreign investors to the participation in the project. Another reason for the cancellation was the pressure on the part of the European Union and the United States, which require Bulgaria to reduce its dependence on Russia, including that in the energy sector.
