European banks offer cheap mortgage for energy-efficient housing

As Energy Life News reported on Thursday, a total of 37 major European banks joined forces to launch a new pilot scheme for mortgage lending for energy-efficient housing. Among the participants of this project are BNP Paribas, ING Bank, Nordea Bank and Société Générale.

These banks will test new criteria for mortgage loans for energy-efficient housing, developed by national Green Building Councils. The privilege will also extend to upgrading ordinary houses to higher “green” standards.

It is noteworthy that banks view this initiative as a way to reduce their own risks as creditors since homeowners who pay less for electricity more easily pay their mortgage loans.
