Scientists simulated transportation of Kerch Bridge’s navigable arches

“The arches transportation operation to the fairway is scheduled for the end of August — beginning of September 2017. It is planned to take from three to five days for each arch,” — a press release of Taman road department, which is a commissioner of the bridge, reads.

Delivery of arches to the fairway is one of the most complicated operations, not only within the framework of the project, but in the practice of a domestic bridge building as well.

“First, arches are the most overall structures of the Crimean bridge, nearly 6 thousand tons is the weight of a rail one and over 4 tons — of a road one, the length of each is more than 200 meters. Second, shall depth of the Kerch Strait is hardly commensurable with a draft of the pontoons. Third, the Kerch-Yenikalsky channel is characterized by unstable wind,” — the document says.

The experiment involved building models of the navigable arches at the scale of 1:60, as well as pontoons for their transportation and tugs.
