Architecture under the Ground: Development of Megalopolises’ Underground Spaces as City-Planning Trend

The modern level of urbanization dictates its terms of development for major cities. Under the conditions of a noticeable deficit in vacant urban lands, in addition to active development of new blocks and construction of high-rise buildings, there is a growing need for comprehensive development of underground spaces.

Several key sessions of the International Forum for High-Rise and Unique Construction 100+ Forum Russia to be held in Ekaterinburg from 5 to 7 October 2016 will be focused on the urgent topic of underground construction and efficient functioning of the urban environment. It will be the first time the Russian and international experience in this field is discussed among professionals in such detail.

The most indicative examples which are probably known by everyone include Eurotunnel, the railway tunnel under the English Channel connecting Great Britain and France, the Grand Louvre project in Paris. The architect Ieoh Ming Pei, who redesigned one of the world’s best-known museums, moved all administrative and service rooms underground, and the central entrance was made in the pyramid at the center of Napoleon’s court. This allowed preserving the architectural appearance of the palace while the underground construction enlarged the area for museum visitors. The underground public zone in Montreal (RESO) is another example of the efficient use of underground space as a shopping area.

Russian examples include, first of all, the Moscow Metro, which was commissioned in 1935 and changed the “transport look” of the city, and the underground railway in Saint-Petersburg. At 100+ Forum Russia, the Northern Capital’s experience will be discussed using the example of Uprising Square (Ploshchad Vosstaniya) that plays an important role in the city-planning structure. A solution for the complex transport hub in the center of Saint-Petersburg proposed by the architects includes a junction and a tunnel along Ligovsky Avenue under Nevsky Avenue, a shopping center situated under the entire Uprising Square, a parking lot, and a shopping street under Nevsky Avenue. The topic will be presented by Yuri Zemtsov, architect, head and partner of the architectural bureau Zemtsov, Kondiain & Partners.

Major issues of 100+ Forum Russia also include innovative solutions for design and construction of underground structures and complexes, development of comfortable and efficient underground space: pedestrian zones, new transport hubs, and tunnels. The balance of blending the modern design and the historical ensemble of the city, which is a topical issue for many megalopolises, will be addressed. A review of the global and Russian design technologies for the underground railway will be another subject relevant to major cities.

Innovations in bridge engineering and construction to be discussed at the 100+ Forum in Ekaterinburg
100+ Forum gathers in Ekaterinburg the leading experts in bridge engineering and construction

Bridge engineering will be one of the central themes of 100+ Forum Russia: the 3rd International Forum for High-rise and Special Construction will discuss innovations, cutting-edge technology, and international developments in this field. The Forum, which will be held at IEC Ekaterinburg-EXPO from October 5 to October 7, 2016, will bring together the industry’s top experts.

Construction of bridges is one of the most currently important and promising approaches for developing Russia’s cities. According to Mr. Aleksandr Vasilyev, Member of the Russian Academy of Transport and Director of the Institute for research into bridges and other civil engineering structures (“IMIDIS”), many countries face similar challenges in this area: "Currently, it is difficult to pinpoint a leader in bridge engineering among the world’s countries. Advances are being made on a broad front both in the East and the West. Extra-large-span bridges, road traffic interchanges, and architecture dictate fashion in bridge construction. On the one hand, this is due to a rapid growth of traffic in recent decades, car traffic by prevalence, and on the other – due to the general economic integration achieving a global scale, which called for even further development of transport infrastructure".

Beautiful cable-stayed and suspension bridges, in addition to being important transport hubs, often become sightseeing attractions: the world's longest (3911 m) bridge crosses the Akashi Strait, connecting Honshu and Awaji islands of Japan, while the Ataturk Bridge (1560 m long, with its main span measuring 1074 m) became a landmark of Istanbul.

Russia also has acclaimed examples of large-span bridges, such as the bridges across the Eastern Bosphorus strait, connecting Russkiy Island to mainland (its central span’s length is 1104 m), and the Golden Horn Bay bridge in Vladivostok (main span: 737 m), the bridge across the Ob River in Surgut (length of the cable-stayed span: 408 m), or the "mesh arch" spanning the Ob River in Novosibirsk (main span: 380 m). Currently, a 19-kilometer bridge from mainland to Crimea is being built. "You could call this solution a sensation in bridge engineering: I mean sliding blocks of the arch longitudinally over a circular scaffolding when building the Bugrinsky Bridge across the Ob River in Novosibirsk", - underscored Mr. Vasilyev.

Many Russian cities have bridges that serve as major arteries and interconnect their boroughs, but whose date of construction goes back several decades. Expert reviews more and more often return conclusions stating extreme deterioration of structures and impossibility to continue bridge operation. One of the best examples for this is the Kommunalniy Bridge in Perm: its operation after 2017 will be impossible. Closing a bridge (including for repairs) impedes traffic between large urban areas on both sides of a river. This is one of the main challenges encountered when rebuilding old bridges: the city of Ekaterinburg is undergoing preparations for the Makarovskiy Bridge’s overhaul, having already limited the amount of traffic that crosses it.

Other important trends in bridge engineering named by the experts are multi-level interchanges and organic architectural solutions, "Multi-level interchanges with diverse grade separation and outlines are meant to solve the problems of urban traffic. Another feature is a shift towards the most modernist architectural forms that sometimes take a very exotic look, and, apparently, fit into the new phase of architecture’s evolution",- commented on the current situation Mr. Aleksandr Vasilyev.

The experts gathering at the Forum will discuss innovative approaches to construction and development of bridges. The thematic section’s agenda comprises issues ranging from standards and quality management to specific examples of implementation and monitoring of new technologies.

Today, the importance of anti-recession technologies and measures aimed at reducing the costs of housing construction per square meter is obvious like never before. This subject matter will be among the key pillars of the International Forum for High-Rise and Unique Construction, aka ‘100+ Forum Russia’, that will take place in Yekaterinburg from October 5 to 7, 2016

There is a “concrete stereotype” in Russia, coming down to the following: it’s easier, faster, more effective and cheaper to build concrete-based residential and administrative buildings, and steel structures are mostly used for industrial applications. Not only international experience but also Russian practices prove that this is not quite the case: some famous buildings in Moscow, such as the skyscraper of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia, the COMECON building, the Ukraine hotel (built in 1957), etc. were erected using steel structures as a frame. The global practice also shows that high-rise buildings with a steel frame are very durable – one of the symbols of New York, the Empire State Building, having been opened in 1931, was built in slightly over a year. A good example of modern high-rise construction in Russia where a steel frame has been used for the structural system is the complex Eurasia Tower in Moscow International Business Center, also referred to as ‘Moscow City’.

Structural steel in contemporary Russia has been increasingly used in civil engineering construction. The Steel Construction Development Association (SCDA), which unites leading manufacturers and suppliers of rolled metal products, steel fabrication facilities, research and design institutes, architectural firms and educational institutions, offers to developers to use ready-made standard design solutions based on constructional steel for building entire residential areas. In Russian regions one can cite such residential clusters as ‘Novomarussino’ (Novosibirsk), ‘Aliy Parus’ (Novokuznetsk), ‘Vremena Goda’ (Nizhny Novgorod), etc.

Dmitry Yeremeyev, General Director of SCDA:”We have prepared a pilot project support program for developers, which will make it possible to reduce the construction costs by 10 per cent as compared to the cast-in-place construction technology, and to hasten the construction process. The shell of a standard ten-storied building can be erected within four months.” According to experts its construction costs will be from RUR10,500 to 12,000 per square meter.

Research and design institutes of this country have been working to develop a normative framework for steel-concrete composite construction. In the beginning of this year, a draft building regulation named “Steel-Concrete Composite Structures. Design Guidelines” was developed, and the initial version of it currently being discussed. Experts will consider the results of this public discussion at the 100+ Forum Russia in 2016.

The Forum’s business program also covers the problems of constructional steel applications when building unique facilities – bridges and long span structures, as well as the reports on the best technical solutions in this field and the industry working conditions. You will find more details in the Program of the 100+ Forum Russia 2016.

Registration is now open at the Forum’s official website.
