In 2015, damage caused by corruption and crime in the Northern Caucasus exceeded 4.4 bln roubles, said the Deputy General Prosecutor for the Northern Caucasus, Ivan Sydoruk.
He made this statement whilst speaking at an interdepartmental meeting of the heads of the regional law enforcement agencies. According to Mr Sydoruk, a total of 1,873 crimes of corruption have been revealed.
That is 11.6% more than in 2014. Corruption accounts for 2.5% of all registered crime in the region. On a national scale, this figure is the highest in Russia.
Meanwhile, the number of corruption cases that were brought to court has increased by 18%. 754 people have been convicted on corruption charges in the Northern Caucasus. Among them are 129 directors and civil servants.
