Following an audit by the Belarussian housing and utility sector, over 20 criminal cases have been initiated against the relative department’s officials.
This is what the head of the State Control Committee of Belarus, Leonid Anfimov, told reporters in the Vitebsk region. According to him, half of the Housing and Utility Ministry’s officers could be arrested.
It was merely the unpredictable reaction of the country’s population that led to these officials being left at large and the decision was taken at the highest level, Mr Anfimov said.
The complete list of public servants arrested with regard to the initiated cases will be announced later.
It should be mentioned that the checks were started by order of the Belarussian President, Alexander Lukashenko. The decision was made as soon as the law enforcement agencies established that the utility bill totals had been heavily overstated.
