Governor Chris Christie issued an executive order to halt all state-funded transportation projects across the state.

This measure results from the Legislature's inability to agree on a plan to increase the gas tax and establish a new Transportation Trust Fund. The existing one expired on Thursday.

Last week the State Assembly voted to increase the New Jersey gas tax by 23 cents, however, the State Senate left without voting on it. As a result, thousands of workers laboring in the road, bridge and rail construction projects have been left in the state of uncertainty of whether they will lose their jobs, pix11.com reports.

The situation is compounded by the fact that this time period is a peak construction season.

On Tuesday, the state is due to present a list of all projects subject to suspension.
