The Defense Ministry of Russia plans to construct and reconstruct 10 airfields in the Arctic in its efforts to increase the country’s presence in the region, TASS reports on Monday.




The construction work of military infrastructure is carried out by the Federal Special Construction Agency of Russia in the area of six islands in the Arctic. For that purpose, over 100 tons of materials for 150 facilities will be delivered to remote military garrisons.

Apart from that, over 190 tons of aerodrome plates, cement, metal, pipes, fittings and equipment are planned to be delivered to the region for the construction of the facilities.

The deployment of Russian military units in the Arctic will be completed by 2020.
