Construction of Novovoronezh nuclear power plant has caused a “pilgrimage” of foreign delegations to Russia, the head of Rosatom State Nuclear Energy Corporation, Sergey Kirienko, reported to Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday.
He called nuclear reactor power start-up at Novovoronezh NPP a milestone event both for Russian and global nuclear industry, since this facility will become the world's first power unit of “3+” generation. Sergey Kirienko described it as a direct evidence of Russia's leadership in the field of NPP construction.
At present, similar power units are being built in Belarus, Hungary, Egypt and Bangladesh. However, the head unit is constructed in Russia, that is why it is this NPP that the foreign delegates ask to demonstrate them. These power units are the future of nuclear energy industry, said Sergey Kirienko.
The nuclear power plant is located by the side of the Don River, 42 kilometers southward of the Russian city of Voronezh. Its new power unit is equipped with passive restraint systems, which don't require personnel's involvement in case of emergency and prevents its subsequent escalation.
