JSC Tyazhmash manufactures core catchers for Bushehr NPP power units

JSC Tyazhmash, one of the largest mechanical engineering companies in Russia, will manufacture a core catcher, the protection system for the second and the third power units of Iranian “Bushehr” nuclear power plant, which will be built with the participation of Russia, as it follows from Rosatom documentation published on the website of state procurement.




A core catcher is a device provided to catch the molten core material - corium - of a reactor in case of a meltdown and prevent it from escaping the containment building. Rosatom installed its first core catcher at Tianwan nuclear power plant in China constructed upon Russian project.

Earlier, JSC Atomkomplekt, a Rosatom’s enterprise, announced a tender for production of core catchers intended for Bushehr NPP. A core catcher for the second power unit is scheduled to be delivered to the commissioner at the end of September 2018, and the devise for the third one is to be delivered at the end of 2019. A total amount of work is estimated at 730 million roubles.
