Ukranian Minister of Energy and Coal Industry, Igor Nasalik, announced that the construction of air-cooled SNF storage was completed.

He spoke on it in Verkhovnaya Rada, TASS reports today.

Every year Ukraine paid $200m for SNF disposition. Starting with 2017 we shall not do it as we have now our own repository for spent nuclear fuel”, he said.

He also added that the fifth unit of Zaporozhie NPP works with Westinghouse fuel. According to Nasalik, the program of transition of 40% of Ukranian nuclear power units over to American nuclear fuel is being considered now.

The operator of the four working NPP in Ukraine is “Energoatom”. In March, 2016 the accounts and property of the Ukranian holding with the total cost of 200bln grivnas was arrested by the executive service, that’s why Rosatom postponed the exportation of the SNF from Ukraine to Russia due to non-payment.

In July,2016 it became known that the Ukranian holding resumed payments to the “TVEL” JSC Russian fuel company, being the main deliverer of nuclear fuel for the Ukranian NPP.
