By the end of 2017, first roads made from recycled plastic might appear in the Netherlands, Vedomosti newspaper reports. It will become possible due to an agreement signed recently by KWS, Wavin and Total companies.
A concept of plastic roads was developed by KWS in 2015. The matter concerns production of modules made from recycled plastic, which will be used for construction of motorways. These modules are capable to resist such pressure, as asphalt does, but have a number of advantages compared to the latter.
Plastic roads are lighter and therefore can be transported, assembles and maintained much easily. These modules are hollow inside, so that there is room for utility and drainage systems. When their lifetime expires, the modules might be recycled again.
