Construction of a wall with the height of four meters and the length of one kilometer has been completed along a highway leading to the French port of Calais, francetvinfo reports on Tuesday.

The wall construction, that was funded by the British government as part of a 20-million euro joint Anglo-French package of security measures, was launched on the 20th of September 2016.

The fencing is designed to deter illegal immigrants, accommodated in the Calais camp, from breaking through into the port located in the vicinity of the settlement.

Earlier, the camp residents stowed away on vehicles on the French side of the Channel, but no migrants resorted to this trick since the camp was dismantled in October.
