The Governor of the Sakhalin region, Oleg Kozhemyako, invited the Governor of the Japanese Prefecture of Hokkaido Harumi Takahashi to visit the South Kuril Islands, the press office of the Sakhalin region’s government reports on Monday.




“We are the nearest neighbors and the interaction between the Sakhalin and Hokkaido strongly depends on Russian-Japanese relations as a whole”, - the head of the region said during a bilateral meeting, which took place late last week in Tokyo.

“I think you need to try to go there. Officially I invite you, along with Japanese businessmen, to visit the Islands for the purpose to discuss the possibility of conducting joint economic activities on these territories”, - Oleg Kozhemyako added.

He stressed that the Sakhalin authorities are willing to provide opportunities for the participation of Japanese companies in projects in the Southern Kuril Islands, including the construction of housing, roads, the establishment of recycling industries, as well as undertakings in the field of aquaculture.
