Rosatom plans to take a decision on the start of construction of an advanced nuclear fast breeder reactor BN-1200 until the end of this year, the director of Beloyarsk nuclear power plant, Ivan Sidorov, told reporters in Yekaterinburg on Wednesday.
According to him, at present, the company considers its building in a projected South-Ural NPP in the Chelyabinsk region, in Russia, or in the existing Beloyarsk station in the Sverdlovsk region.
Advantages of the latter option is availability of necessary infrastructure and technicians able to operate fast breeder reactors. This is especially important, since there is no more of such power units in the world. We should remind you that Beloyarsk NPP was put in operation in 1964.
The main feature of fast breeder reactors is their environmental friendliness and the capability to produce more nuclear fuel than they consume themselves.
