In 2018, China will embark on the construction of its first airfield in Antarctica. The facility will be able to accept aircrafts of all types, a deputy director of Polar Research Institute of China, Sun Bo, announced.
“Experts have examined a three-kilometer site for the construction of a runway at Zhongshan station (in Antarctica – editor’s note)” - local media reports. According to Sun Bo, first, “the airfield is going to have only one runway”. The newspaper notes that the next step will be the construction of additional runways and expansion of airport infrastructure.
According to China Daily, construction of the airport will “significantly increase efficiency” of work of scientists from China.
